Founded by Masataka Taketsuru — widely regarded as the father of Japanese whisky — Nikka is built on the marriage of two very different distilleries: the smoky, coastal character of Yoichi in Hokkaido and the softer, fruitier elegance of Miyagikyo in the north of Honshu.
Nikka is not just a whisky — it is the living legacy of one man’s devotion to authentic Scotch-style craft, transplanted to Japan and perfected over generations.
Masataka Taketsuru travelled to Scotland to learn the art of whisky-making, returning to Japan with the knowledge and passion that would shape an entire nation’s distilling culture. In 1934 he founded what would become Nikka, building the Yoichi distillery on the northern island of Hokkaido — drawn to its cool climate, abundant peat and clean water, conditions strikingly similar to Scotland.
Two decades later, the Miyagikyo distillery brought a counterpoint to the house: nestled in a forested mountain valley, its softer water and gentle climate yield a lighter, more delicate, distinctly floral spirit. The contrast between the two — robust and coastal versus elegant and refined — gives Nikka’s blends and pure malts their remarkable depth.
Today, Nikka’s range spans premium blended whiskies, the celebrated Taketsuru pure malt and the graceful Miyagikyo single malts — each a testament to Taketsuru’s belief that whisky is made in the meeting of place, time and craft.
